Suicide Is NOT SELFISH!

I've written this as a post again but after the recent events of Robin Williams suicide, it bears repeating.

IT is NOT a selfish act.

It is a human response to try to stop pain. You don't think that they care about their families and loved ones? OF course they do! It runs through their minds all the time. Which is why MOST people try to reach out before they make an attempt. That's why there are warning signs. MOST don't come out and say 'I am going to kill myself'. But they make attempts and begin to act out in ways and hope that someone notices.

I remember praying that my mother noticed. Alas, she never did.

But this comment makes my skin boil.

Many people don't understand mental illness and how it works. Many have not been given to tools to understand that mental illness twists thoughts, and distort realities. Most people who commit suicide are NOT  in their right minds. So you expect them to make a rational decision? And then demonize them after death but criticizing them for and judging them? That logic is flawed because their reality becomes very different from your own.  Depression is A DISEASE and SUICIDE is the FATAL SYMPTOM of that disease.

There is nothing selfish about suicide. What is selfish is those of us who are left behind thinking that our loved one, who is experiencing debilitating pain, somehow owes it to US to live....
