Match.com, A Beautiful Girl, A Gentleman, and A Suicide

"I really need the money!" cooed the beautiful stranger. The cursor blinked in front of the older gentleman at least a thousand times before he responded. His throat instantly grew dry and his pursed his lips together. His bank account was running on fumes and his creditors were howling like wolves on his doorstep demanding payment.

But how could Adam Circelli resist?

He met her on Match.com and fell in love. Adam was seventy years old and was a retired businessman. He lived a pretty decent life until "Aisha" entered it. Now he was a broken man, resorting to borrowing money from his son to make ends meet. When it was all said and done, Aisha made off with $50,000 while Adam lost his life.

Aisha from Ghana told Adam that she loved him while scamming him out of thousands. Adam even resorted to opening credit cards in his son's name, ruining his credit after not being able to pay back the cash advances he had taken out.

But Aisha was a fake. The photos actually belonged to a model named Yuliana Avalos. Aisha from Ghana was a phantom: a mere ghost that he had chased around.

He had to meet her. But when she didn't show up on a flight that she supposedly booked, Mr. Circelli took his life.

Some may look at this story and feel nothing but contempt for Adam. What was a seventy year old man doing talking to a woman in her thirties? They had never met so why in the world would he send her money? He was not of an upstanding moral character because he defrauded his son! Why should we feel sorry for this character?

Sympathy doesn't always ask you to understand the actions of individuals. It doesn't ask you to understand their motivations for doing the things that they do. We can simply bow our heads and hope that each and every soul, regardless of their moral character, find peace at the end of their lives.  We have ALL done things that we were not proud of. Dying is something that we're all going to do regardless, albeit in very different ways. Since it is something that we all have to go through, then we should show compassion.

I hope that Adam finds peace. I also hope that the person behind the mask of Aisha finds peace as well. A lot of people sees those of us in the West as all rich and decadent jerks.

Having no Compassion is the root of many of our problems. If we all looked at things from a compassionate point of view, horrible things don't have to occur. "Aisha" wouldn't have felt the need to get online and scam people if they had compassion for the person on the other side of the computer screen. You don't have to agree with someone's behavior or character to feel compassion for them.
